About The City of East Sarajevo

The city of East Sarajevo is a territorial-administrative unit of the Republic of Srpska and it consists of the municipalities Sokolac, Pale, East Stari Grad, East Novo Sarajevo, East Ilidža and Trnovo. It presents the economic, university, culture and sports center of the east part of the Republic of Srpska.

East Sarajevo is placed in the east part of the Republic of Srpska, or the central part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it is spatially connected with the city of Sarajevo.

Total area of the city is 1425.77 km2. Some important road traffic routes pass over its territory and near the town is the central railway station Sarajevo. Sarajevo International Airport is very close to the city (1 km).

LABOUR MARKET (ACCORDING TO THE DATA FROM 2009)

The city of East Sarajevo presents one of the more important educational centers in the region. Within its six municipalities there are 9 regular central elementary schools, 4 secondary school centers and the University within which 8 faculties are contained (Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Economy, Academy of Music, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Physical Culture). The qualification structure of the labour force at the territory of the city is diverse, in accordance with the numerous educational institutions.

Pursuant to the record on the insurants of the Pension-invalid Insurance Fund, the total number of the employed in September 2009 in the city of East Sarajevo was 19236. In the year 2008, legal persons from the city territory were employing 17475 workers. The difference arises from the fact that a number of the city citizens works in the municipalities that do not belong to the city.

The structure of the employed, pursuant to the activities of the companies in the year 2008, shows that the biggest number of workers in East Sarajevo is employed in commerce, processing industry and construction industry. A quarter of the workers is employed in the state management bodies and public institutions (health care and education).

In recent past, major business systems in the field of machine, electrical and wood processing industry existed on the territory of the city of East Sarajevo (Famos, Energoinvest…). Because of the bad effects of privatization and the badly implemented transition process, a great number of vocational and trained workers (staff) in the named fields of work became unemployed, still presenting an important resource for potential investors because of their expertise and experience.
